The painting began as a series of thumbnails to help nail-down layout issues. I wanted the layout to have a triangular composition and feel cramped by both the space occupied by the heroes and the vignette caused by the darkness surrounding the characters.
While the final illustration is digitally painted in Adobe Photoshop, the underlying work is blue Prismacolor pencil on Bristol board. Edits were performed with the same pencil on tracing paper. The final drawing was photographed by a Canon digital mirrorless camera.
